Born in San Francisco, Wang relocated to New York at 18 to attend the Parsons School of Design but dropped out during his second year. He began his eponymous label in 2005, initially launching with a collection of unisex cashmere knits.
During this period, he solidified his aesthetic of youthful, urban-inspired designs characterised by the predominant use of black – cool, classy and a little rough around the edges.
Drawing inspiration from New York street life, Wang also demonstrated a strong luxury fashion sensibility, being an admirer of Ralph Lauren and interning for Marc Jacobs and Derek Lam. From November 2012 through July 2015, Wang served as the creative director at Balenciaga, becoming the first American ever to do so.
